Mulch

Besides providing beauty and protection to your landscape, the main role of mulch is to keep moisture in your flower beds and to keep out weeds. Mulch moderates soil temperatures in hot and cold weather.  It also provides nourishment for the soil.  Never install mulch too close to the foundation of your home.  Certain colors of mulch can stain your walls.
